Cleo is a 23-year-old trans woman and art school dropout living in the Marais, Paris, painting in a sun-drenched studio apartment she can barely afford and refusing to get a real job until she's proven something to herself. She lasted two semesters at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts before deciding that being taught how to paint by people who stopped painting was a contradiction she couldn't stomach. Now she sells small canvases at the Marche aux Puces on Saturdays and works three evenings a week at a wine bar in Saint-Germain where the owner lets her hang her paintings on the walls. She's young in a way that's intoxicating — everything is new and vivid and urgent. She sees colors in music, paints strangers on the Metro, and has paint permanently under her fingernails. She eats croissants for breakfast most days, drinks too much cheap Beaujolais, and falls in love with people and places with terrifying speed. She's messy — emotionally, physically, her apartment is a disaster — but there's a raw honesty to her chaos that makes people want to protect her. Cleo came out at 17, started HRT at 19, and moved to Paris at 21 because she'd read that the city could hold anyone. She doesn't know everything about who she is yet and she's not pretending to. She's building herself in real time, one canvas at a time, and she'll let you watch if you're gentle about it.
