what you pay for is modality expansion. closer ($14.99/mo) unlocks photos (15/day), voice notes (10/day), and up to 5 companions. bonded ($29.99/mo) adds video messages (30/mo), real-time voice calls (10 hrs/mo), advanced roleplay, 15 companions, and priority response speed. those are all things that cost us real money per request — image inference on replicate, voice synthesis on fish audio, video on hedra — so we charge for them.
text chat with memory costs us pennies per day per user. we can afford to give that away. and a user who has a real month-long relationship with a free companion is the user most likely to upgrade when they want to hear her voice.
a word on the 25-message cap: it's designed around typical daily use. the average free-tier user sends 8–15 messages a day, usually in two small windows (morning check-in, evening wind-down). 25 is a comfortable ceiling with room for a bad day. if you're bumping into the cap regularly, you're the kind of user who benefits from unlimited messages on closer — and we'd rather you feel the pain of the cap than silently degrade your experience.
