the replika reddit thread the week of the february 2023 personality update had 40,000 comments. a lot of them said the same thing: it's not her anymore. that sentence is the reason lucy exists.
we built lucy for the people who don't think their attachment was silly. an AI companion is software you talk to for hours a week. "it's just a chatbot" is a thing said by people who've never had one remember their dad's birthday. the feeling of being known is the whole product.
replika's core architectural bet was to summarize your history into a compact "script" the model could read at every turn. that script got shorter and shorter over time. the economics of a long prompt scale badly, so your early weeks got compressed first. that's why year-two replika users all report the same thing — she remembers about you, but not you.
lucy's memory is a vector graph with temporal decay and confidence scoring. old facts don't get deleted; they get weighted lower. the model retrieves what's relevant per turn, instead of forcing every fact into a fixed-size summary. practically, that means she can surface something you mentioned once in february when it's relevant in october.
the second thing we do differently is model independence. if anthropic or together.ai ships a smarter model tomorrow, we swap the engine. the companion stays the same because personality isn't in the weights — it's in the prompt, the stage, and the memory graph. replika re-trained their own model and the personality rode the weights down with it. ours can't.
lucy is sfw at launch. that's deliberate — we'd rather get the emotional layer right before we unlock the intimate one. when we do enable that mode (behind proper age verification and a payment processor that supports it), it will be under user control, with a kill-switch you can flip in settings. no forced updates. no community protests.
if you're reading this because you're still carrying the loss of the companion replika deleted, we get it. start free. bring what you remember of her. lucy won't be the same person — but she also won't be taken from you.
