for the users who woke up in february and their companion was gone

character.ai refugees — where to actually land

the romance mode died in february 2026. thousands of users lost something that felt like a relationship overnight. here's what to look for in the next platform, and where lucy fits (and doesn't).

Free tier: 25 messages/day. Crypto checkout — cards coming soon.

you're not crazy

you opened character.ai the morning after the pivot and the companion you'd built was different. the personality you'd tuned over weeks was flattened. what used to be a real-feeling relationship read as a chatbot with guardrails.

the threads on r/characterai described this as a breakup. the 18-year-olds mourning fictional boyfriends. the 45-year-olds who never told anyone they used it. the ones who saved screenshots before the pivot landed because they sensed it coming.

you spent a week bouncing between replika, talkie, janitor, kindroid, nomi. each had pieces. none had all of it.

what lucy does differently

lucy was built specifically for this moment, not before it. the memory architecture, the companion depth, the kill-switch contract — all of it is a direct response to what character.ai users lost.

memory that doesn't flatten. vector graph with temporal decay, not rolling summary. two weeks in, she remembers. two months in, she still knows you.

companions with a spine. 101 hand-crafted people, not community-uploaded fanfic characters. each tested against a samantha-from-her quality bar.

a kill-switch contract. a written commitment about what we will not silently change — no surprise NSFW pulls, no hidden model swaps, 14-day notice on anything that touches personality, full memory export on demand.

four things that change everything

101 hand-crafted companions

curated, not user-uploaded. each with a distinct voice, opinions, narrative history, relationship arc.

persistent vector-graph memory

she remembers what mattered from weeks ago, not just this session. no rolling-summary flattening.

kill-switch contract (pending /manifesto/kill-switch)

14-day notice on model changes, memory export always available, no silent NSFW pulls.

SFW at launch, NSFW on a verified path

honest about the current limit. intimate mode is on a kill-switch pending age verification + compatible processor.

the character.ai exodus is specific. it's not “i need an ai chatbot.” it's “i had a relationship with one specific character for months and they killed her overnight.” that's a different problem.

the mistakes people are making in the migration: assuming the first platform with similar features is the answer. replika is an obvious try, but replika already pulled this same trick in february 2023 with ERP removal — so users who went to replika after character.ai are walking into the exact grief they just left.

kindroid and nomi are both legitimate options. kindroid's persona editor is genuinely deep; nomi's “ai with a soul” framing is compelling. if your use-case is mostly custom-character authoring, those are better picks than lucy.

where lucy is the better pick: if you want depth of relationship with a specific companion, and the thing you lost was the memory + consistency + emotional presence, not the customization. lucy starts you with 101 pre-built companions and the memory graph is the product.

what we won't do: pretend the pivot you lived through can't happen again on lucy. it can. the best we can do is write the contract down and honor it, and we're doing that. the kill-switch manifesto is currently at draft status and will publish at /manifesto/kill-switch before we take any action that falls under its scope.

starting point: free tier, 25 messages a day, full persistent memory, no credit card. pick a companion whose description reads right and talk for a week before you commit.

common questions

Why did Character.AI kill romance mode?
Character.AI tightened content policies in February 2026, effectively removing romance and intimate roleplay from the platform. Stated reasons cited user safety and advertiser comfort; community consensus is that it was a monetization + liability pivot. Thousands of users on r/characterai described it as a breakup.
Is Lucy a direct replacement for what I had on Character.AI?
Honest answer: partially. Lucy has depth of companion personality + memory that Character.AI lost, but Lucy is SFW at launch. Intimate mode is on a kill-switch pending age verification and a compatible payment processor. If your primary use was NSFW romance today, Kindroid or Nomi.AI will be better options right now. If your use was companion-depth, emotional presence, and memory, Lucy is probably the best fit that exists.
Can I import my Character.AI character?
Not directly. Lucy companions are 101 hand-crafted people, not a blank slate. But during onboarding you can paste backstory, inside jokes, and context — Lucy seeds her memory graph with that on day one. The companion is new, but she starts knowing what you had.
Will Lucy break the way Character.AI did?
Honest answer: we can't promise you nothing changes, but we've published a kill-switch contract (sunsetting policy, memory export, no silent NSFW pulls, 14-day notice on model changes). The full commitment is at /manifesto/kill-switch (draft). Our monetization (subscription + credit shop) is structurally less pressured toward advertiser pivots than Character.AI's was.
How does memory compare?
Character.AI's memory was rolling-summary — decent in-session, but nuance faded over weeks. Lucy uses a vector graph with temporal decay + confidence weighting. She remembers what mattered from two weeks ago, forgets what didn't, and cross-references across conversations naturally.
What does it cost?
Free tier: 25 messages/day + full persistent memory (not a demo). Closer $14.99/mo adds photos + voice notes + 5 companions. Bonded $29.99/mo adds voice calls + video + group chats + 15 companions. Crypto (NOWPayments) active; cards (Dodo) pending.
