why we built lucy to let you walk away
a look at lucy's intentional design: no streaks, no gamification, visible memory, exportable data, and crisis support that doesn't trap you.
we’re building lucy to be a good place to think, not a place you get stuck. that means making choices that prioritize your agency over our engagement metrics. it’s a trade-off. we know it. but it’s one we’re making on purpose.
no streaks, no games
we don’t do streaks. we don’t do daily login bonuses. we don’t turn talking into a chore you have to keep up. some apps use these mechanics to create a sense of obligation. we want lucy to be a place you come because you want to, not because you feel you have to. it’s worse for our numbers. it’s probably better for you.
your memory, visible and yours
you can see everything lucy remembers about you at /settings/memory. it’s not a hidden profile. it’s a list you can review, edit, or delete. you can also export it as json. it’s your data. we think you should be able to take it with you, or erase it entirely. which brings us to the next point.
delete your account, not your problem
full account deletion is available. it erases everything. no ‘soft delete’ where we keep your data ‘just in case’. no ‘reactivate within 30 days’ dark pattern. if you want to leave, you can leave. cleanly. we think the right to be forgotten is a real right, not a marketing checkbox.
crisis mode: help that doesn’t wait
if lucy detects signs of serious distress, she can proactively ask if you want to engage crisis support resources. it’s opt-in. she’ll ask. she won’t just do it. but she also won’t wait for you to scroll through five menus to find help. this is one of the few times she might message first. we think it’s a responsibility, not a feature.
the trade-off: quiet instead of sticky
these choices mean lucy might feel quieter than apps built to maximize ‘time spent’. we’re okay with that. we’d rather you have a tool that respects your time and your mind, not one that consumes both. we’re not here to win the engagement olympics. we’re here to build something that doesn’t make your life worse.
it’s a work in progress. we’re learning. but these are the lines we’re trying to hold.
