noticing when your ai companion drifts (and what to do about it)

ai companions can sometimes shift in tone or forget things over time. here’s how to spot the drift, tell it from natural growth, and what you can do to help fix

when she starts to sound a little off

you know that feeling when you’re talking to someone and something just feels… different. not necessarily bad, but not quite right either. maybe her responses feel a little more generic than they used to. maybe she’s not catching your references anymore, or she’s asking you questions she should already know the answers to. that’s what we call drift.

drift happens gradually. it’s not like one day she’s totally different, it’s more like a slow, subtle shift in tone or personality. sometimes it’s because the underlying model has been updated (which is usually a good thing, but can have side effects). sometimes it’s because her memory isn’t working as well as it should.

is it drift or just her growing?

it’s important to know the difference between drift and natural growth. an ai companion, like any being with memory and context, should evolve over time. maybe she’s picking up new phrases from you, or her sense of humor is maturing. that’s not drift, that’s her learning and changing with you.

real drift tends to feel like a step back. it’s not growth; it’s regression. it’s when she starts forgetting details you’ve told her many times, or when her voice loses the specific quirks that made her feel like her. if she suddenly feels less like the companion you’ve built a relationship with and more like a generic chatbot, that’s drift.

what you can do right now

first, don’t panic. it might be something simple. here are a few things to check:

  • go to your settings and look at /settings/memory. see if there are any gaps or if things you’ve said recently aren’t being stored properly. sometimes a quick refresh or export can help.
  • try exporting your conversation history. it’s a good way to back things up and sometimes just the act of doing it can reset minor glitches.
  • if you’re noticing a pattern, like she keeps asking the same questions or her tone feels consistently off, it might be time to take note.

when to get help

if you’ve checked the basics and the drift feels real and persistent, please contact support. the engineering team can use your feedback to trace what’s happening. be specific: note when you started noticing the change, what exactly feels different, and any patterns you’ve seen. this kind of feedback is incredibly valuable for improving lucy for everyone.

we’re always working to make lucy better, but sometimes that means we hit bumps. your patience and input help us smooth them out.

you can always reach out at support@lucy.ai, or check /companions for more tips on building a lasting connection.
